How to choose:
Decide what largest diameter hole you are likely to drill.
Look for the a suitably sized drill with the options you need.
Plumbers and electricians often like the Dymaxion PCD1700H as it is big enough for their needs, and the least expensive option.
Fencing contractors like the Tooltech TT2100 as it is a simple yet powerful drill at a great price.
The Dymaxion AGCDM160 has a big motor with extra features like soft start and variable speed.
The Eibenstock PLD182 has the biggest drilling capacity and motor size, with German reliability and durability.
The Husqvarna drills offer many features not found on other drills (eg Elgard, SmartStart, Fleet Services™ system etc), but are more expensive.

Note:
- Core barrels and drill stands are shown for illustrative purposes only - not included in the price!
- Read safety instructions and operation manual before use
- Wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE)
- Core drills and RCD are not waterproof (usually IP55)- keep them out of the water!
- Core drills have big motors - ensure there is sufficient power available to run them
- Do not use the overload protection as on/off switch - when the overload fails, it will not be warranty
- Do not run off generators - they may not be 240 volt, 50Hz, or are usually too small for the drill
- Use only heavy duty (2.5mm minimum but preferably or 4mm) extension cords and keep them as short as possible (under 20m).
- Use the right speed for the diameter of the barrel (see your manual or here)
- Coring over 60-70mm diameter, most manufacturers recommend using a stand with your drill.
- Only change gear when motor not running.
- Put vacuums on a seperate circuit so as not to overload each circuit.

Core drill troubleshooting:
Motor not turning:
Power point not working | Try another power point |
Incorrect power | - Do not run off generators - Extension cords too long - Extension cord not heavy duty enough |
Brushes | Check brushes not worn and moving freely |
RCD not working | Replace by an electrician |
Overload (if fitted) tripped out | Reset - may need to wait till drill cools |
Damaged cable | Usually between RCD and drill, especially if moving cable gets drill to run - replace |
Motor turning but no power - clutch may need to be retightened to factory specifications.
Silica dust - when workers cut, crush, drill, polish, saw or grind products that contain silica, particles are created, which are one-hundredth of the size of a grain of sand. These can get stuck deep in the lungs.
Ensure precautions to limit exposure to dust are in place.
See the WA government's info on silica dust here.
